New England Rivers and Streams

Historic descriptions of New England rivers, streams, waterfalls, brooks, and creeks may be found in the following entries from Hayward's New England Gazetteer of 1839. New England's waterways once powered textile mills, paper factories, and many other industrial operations, and before that they supported a profitable inland fishery. Today they provide opportunities for canoeing, whitewater rafting, birding, fishing, swimming, boat racing, and in a green revival of the old industrial days, microhydro and picohydro power generation.
