New England Slate Quarries
Slate has always been known as a versatile building material with many architectural and artistic uses, from roof shingles, to flooring and paving tiles, to gravestone and cemetery markers. A few workable slate deposits were discovered in the Boston area in the earliest days of colonial New England, and many more quarries have been opened since.
