Springfield, Maine
Penobscot county. The Matakeunk, a branch of the Matawamkeag, rises here, and, with several ponds, gives the town a considerable water power. The soil of the town is fertile, and in 1837, with a population of 398, produced 9,429 bushels of wheat. Springfield was No. 5, 2d range N., of the Bingham Purchase, and was incorporated in 1834. It lies about 60 miles N.E. by E. from Bangor.
