New England Tobacco, Cigars, and Snuff

The New England climate is not especially conducive to the cultivation of tobacco. It's true that tobacco is still grown today in some parts of the region, such as Hadley, Massachusetts, where old tobacco barns are a scenic part of the landscape; but historically it has more often been in the manufacture of tobacco products than in the growth of the tobacco plant that New England has excelled.

Snuff and cigars—or as they were often spelled, segars—have been produced in New England from early times. Hayward's New England Gazetteer of 1839 records the manufacture of tobacco products in these New England towns:
