Fishing in New England

The lakes, ponds, rivers, brooks, and streams of early New England were well stocked with many species of fish. Although Hayward's Gazetteer rarely speaks about recreational fishing specifically, it does record many fresh waters in which large quantities of fish had been caught in the early 1800s. Whether these particular localities still yield a good catch today is an unknown question, but for the adventurous fisherman, the leads provided by Hayward's Gazetteer might turn out to be very profitable:
